Smart Travel Tech for a Smoother Take-Off

Affordable travel gadgets to keep things simple and stress-free
Travel is supposed to be fun, right? A chance to unplug, relax, and explore somewhere new. But let’s be honest, modern travel sometimes feels more like an obstacle course: gate changes, dead devices, tangled cords, and that sinking feeling that your bag is overweight.
If you’ve already used AI tools to plan and book your trip, you’re ahead of the game my friend (if not, check out my post on “AI for the Rest of Us“, it’ll change your life).
The good news? There are simple, affordable travel gadgets that can save you time, stress, and maybe a few swear words at the airport. Whether you’re heading out by plane, train, or SUV, here are my top picks for no-fuss travel tech.
Carry-On Luggage with Built-In Chargers
But first, why the TSA might ruin your day
The TSA recently issued a warning about using public charging stations at airports. Apparently “juice jacking” (where a hacker steals your data while you’re just trying to top-up your phone) is a real thing. No thanks! And don’t even get me started on how unreliable airplane seat chargers are.
The smarter move? A suitcase with a built-in, removable, rechargeable power bank. Here is a great article by Travel + Leisure sharing their top tested and rated carry-ons with removable batteries. I have one of these, and honestly, it’s saved me more times than I can count. You can of course bring a standalone power bank and toss it in your bag; I just like it built into the suitcase so it’s tucked away, protected, and (the real reason) less likely to get lost.
⚠ As of March 2025, the TSA added limits on lithium-ion power banks. They have to go in your carry-on (no checked luggage due to fire risk), and max-out at 100 watt-hours (Wh). If you are looking to purchase a suitcase that comes with one, you’re probably covered, but if you are bringing a separate one, make sure to double-check the specs.
Universal Plug Adapter
If you’re traveling internationally, don’t forget a universal plug adapter. Look for one with multiple ports (USB and USB-C), surge protection, and compatibility with multiple countries. They can be a little bulky, but it’s the MVP of your travel tech line-up and way less stressful than playing “Will it fit?” in a hotel electrical socket. Here is the one that I have, and it worked perfectly on my recent trip to the UK.

Bluetooth Adapters for In-Flight Entertainment
Show of hands – who has a kitchen junk drawer full of those terrible, wired airline earbuds? And even if you remember to bring a pair, the sound from them is trash.
Enter: the Bluetooth audio adapter. These magical little gadgets plug into the seat-back screen and let you use your favorite wireless headphones. No tangles. No tin can sounding audio. Just glorious, cord-free binge-watching of your favourite show.

Noise-Cancelling Headphones or Earbuds
Between crying babies, seatmate chit-chat, and the endless clink-clink of the drink cart, travel can feel like a test of your mental strength. A good pair of noise-cancelling headphones or earbuds are non-negotiable in my mind. These headphones come highly rated (by Wired.com, read the full article here) when compared to some of the big names, and are reasonably priced.
Pair them with that Bluetooth adapter above, and you’ll be streaming in a tranquil Netflix bubble, untouched by the surrounding travel drama.

Digital Luggage Scale
The airport luggage shuffle is real: frantically moving shoes and shampoo between bags to dodge overweight fees while the line behind you silently judges.
A digital luggage scale lets you weigh your bags at home or in your hotel room. Show-up cool, calm, and carry-on compliant.

💬 Bonus laugh: Go watch comedian Sebastian Maniscalco’s comedy bit on overweight luggage. You’re welcome.
Bluetooth Trackers for Your Luggage
Apparently luggage can have wanderlust too. Remedy? Toss a Bluetooth luggage tracker (like a Tile or Apple AirTag) in your suitcase and keep tabs on it from your phone. If your bag goes on its own adventure, at least you’ll know where it’s headed and how long it might take to return to you.

Cord Organizers
We’ve all experienced it; digging through a bag for a charger, looking like a raccoon in a dumpster. Enough with the tech-spaghetti at the bottom of your bag; get yourself a cord organizer. These little pouches keep all of your chargers, adapters, and earbuds in one tidy place. Cheap, small, and will 100% save your sanity. And if you are into organization like me, it is oh-so-satisfying seeing all your cords and chargers perfectly lined-up and strapped in place!

Anti-Theft Crossbody Bags
If you’re headed to a busy market or bustling tourist spot, do yourself a favor and get an anti-theft crossbody bag.
Look for features like:
- Slash-resistant straps
- RFID protection
- Locking zippers
- Hidden pockets
Brands like Travelon and Pacsafe make great ones. And yes, they’ve come a long way from looking like something your dad wore on a cruise in 1994.

Simple Travel Apps That Actually Help
We’ve all downloaded that one app that was supposed to change our life; find the best local eats, help us speak Italian, maybe even match us with a handsome tour guide, only to discover that it barely worked and chewed through our phone battery and data like a toddler on a juice box.
These? These are different. Worth the download and won’t turn your phone into a hot brick by lunch.
📱 Google Lens for Self-Guided Tours
Open your Google app and tap the lens icon in the search bar. Point your camera at a landmark/building/sign/statue and voila, the info pops-up on your screen. No awkward group tours, just instant intel. There are also a ton of city tour apps available in the app stores; from itinerary planners, to AR tours, to audio walking tours. Before you travel, do a quick search and find one that suits your destination and travel style.
📱 Currency Converter
No one wants to accidentally spend $40 on a coffee because they messed up the exchange rate. XE Currency is simple, accurate, and works offline. Also, if you have an iphone, you can easily use the currency conversion function in the calculator app (click the calculator icon in the bottom left corner, and toggle on the ‘convert’ function).
📱 Airline & Flight Trackers
First and foremost, I would strongly encourage you to download the app from the airline(s) you are flying (or train service provider, etc). They are typically the best way to track your departure information, delays, and have the added benefit of holding you digital boarding pass. Some even have news/entertainment available. Apps like FlightAware or Flighty are also good if you want to minimize the number of apps. They keep you updated on gate changes, delays, and baggage claim info.
📱 Translator Apps
Google Translate still reigns supreme. Download your language ahead of time (and for off-line use), and use your camera to translate signs and menus. You can also speak into it for two-way conversation translation.
💡 App Bonus: TripIt or Wanderlog
These apps keep all your plans in one place. Flights, hotels, restaurants – it’s all there.
- TripIt syncs with your email
- Wanderlog is fantastic for road trips, and perfect for people who still print things “just in case”
Rechargeable Travel Fans
These rechargeable neck fans or mini fans are lifesavers for muggy trains, humid hotel rooms, or worse, if you suffer with hot-flashes. Portable, lightweight, and effective. They even double as a talking point. (“Yes, it is a fan on my neck, and no, I won’t share it.”)
What’s Next in Travel Tech?
We’re not quite there yet, but smart glasses are coming. The ones that flash notifications, directions, or translations right on your lens? Totally cool, and also totally pricey! Totally not the travel tech you need for next month’s beach trip. But hey, give it a few years, our future travel selves might be rocking them. If you want to check them out, here are the Ray-Ban Meta Glasses which are probably the most popular and highest rated at this time. They come in clear and tinted sunglass versions.

Final Thoughts
Travel tech doesn’t have to be complicated or expensive. These affordable, easy-to-use gadgets can seriously improve your next trip, whether you’re headed to Paris or Phuket.
